Silesian University of Technology inaugurated new academic year

For 73rd time, the sound of “Gaudeamus Igitur” could have been heard in the walls of the Silesian University of Technology, officially inaugurating the academic year 2017/2018. The ceremony took place on October 2nd, 2017, in Education and Congress Centre. This year’s inauguration was attended by Jarosław Gowin, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

During the inauguration speech, the Rector, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk stated that he is proud of the way our University has used its capital in the past 72 years of tradition. “The first term of office has passed for the University’s new authorities, who continue the development of the institution. We have adopted a new strategy for years 2016-2020, which is consequently implemented,” said the Rector. “We are actively developing the cooperation with socio-economic environment, as well as national and foreign universities. We also increase our activity in terms of popularization of science and actions for the development of the region.”

“Silesian University of Technology is one of the most dynamically developing technical universities in Poland in the recent years,” stated Jarosław Gowin, the Minister. “I would like to congratulate you on your achievements and express my gratitude for numerous representatives of the Silesian University of Technology, who participated in the work on the new legislation on science and higher education.” In his speech, the Minister described the most important changes included in the “Legislation 2.0 Constitution for Science” project. He also addressed 1st year students: “You have made a great decision, applying for study at the Silesian University of Technology!”

The culminating moment of the inauguration was the matriculation. Omnium Studiosorum Optimo medals were also awarded to the best graduates from the last academic year.

The traditional inauguration lecture, “Problems in the development of materials and technologies in aircraft turbine engines,” was delivered by Professor Lucjan Swadźba from the Faculty of Material Engineering and Metallurgy.

Currently, over 21 thousand students study at the Silesian University of Technology, including 15 thousand on full-time programs. In the academic year 2017/2018, around 5,5 thousand students began their higher education at our university, including 4126 on full-time programs.
