Vice Rector Professor Marek Pawełczyk elected chairman of the Silesian Universities Network (SUN)

Professor Marek Pawełczyk PhD, DSc, Vice Rector for Science and Development, was elected chairman of the Silesian Public Universities Consortium- Silesian Universities Network (SUN).
The election took place on 21 July with the unanimous support of the representatives of all member universities. The term of office of Professor Marek Pawełczyk as the chairman will start on 01 October 2020 and will last for 2 years. Currently, this function is performed by professor Grzegorz Juras, Rector Elect of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice.
- The Silesian Public Universities Consortium is an initiative that was established many years ago. Currently, it has its well-established position. So far it has been in very good hands. The current chairman is the Rector of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, professor Grzegorz Juras. I will have the pleasure of presiding over the consortium from 01 October 2020 - says professor Marek Pawełczyk.
The main mission of the consortium established in 2010 is to promote Silesian higher education on a regional, national and international scale. The members of an initiative undertake joint activities to strengthen and consolidate the image of Silesia as a valued centre of science, research and education. The diverse nature of the universities involved in the consortium, enables the arrangement of an attractive programme, which combines the educational offer, social and cultural services. It constitutes an important factor of encouraging students, including foreign students, to study in Silesia.

- It is extremely important that we jointly build the potential of Silesian universities, both in terms of acquiring good candidates for students and in terms of international promotion, the areas emphasised by the consortium.  It is also important to share the available research infrastructure. We are now in an excellent situation due to the fact that the current Vice Rector of the University of Silesia, Professor Tomasz Pietrzykowski became the chairman of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). We will have first-hand information about NAWA's initiatives or international projects, in which we will be able to participate - emphasizes prof. Pawełczyk.
Internationalization is also manifested in the implementation of training for employees of European partner universities, thanks to which the idea of sharing experiences between individual academic units is realized. The cooperation of the consortium universities is supposed to lead to an increase in their internationalization. The result of the activities is to present the Silesian Voivodeship as a modern region, based on the latest technologies, as well as creating space for the implementation of the idea of a lifelong learning, including non-academic education.

- As Silesian universities, we do not compete with each other, we try to cooperate and build common potential. The Silesian University of Technology has the pleasure and honour of being a research university. As part of the first of the 27 tasks, which we have defined, we determined the will to build a common platform of support, exchange of ideas, building mutual relations in the Silesian region, and perhaps, establishing a universities federation. This, of course, depends on the possibilities for encouraging such initiatives. As a research university, we have extraordinary opportunities. First of all, preparing the staff, our recognition, but we do not want to act in isolation. We want the Silesian University of Technology to be a university, that is able to use what we have been given as a research university, to try to promote Silesia as a place to study, a place to live, and a place for scientific development and career together with other universities - emphasizes the Professor.
The consortium brings together 9 universities from the Silesian Voivodeship: the Silesian University of Technology, the University of Bielsko-Biala, the Czestochowa University of Technology and those located in Katowice: the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music , the Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Physical Education, the Medical University of Silesia,  the University of Economics and the University of Silesia.
Professor Marek Pawełczyk is a member of the Scientific Policy Committee, an assisting authority of the Minister of Science and Higher Education. In addition, he represents the Silesian University of Technology in the Committee of Automatic Control and Robotics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in the term 2020–2023. He also chairs the Metrology Commission, a branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Katowice. He was also a member of the Committee on Acoustics of the Polish Academy of Sciences for two terms. He is also the vice-president of an international scientific society that has been operating for over 25 years in around 70 countries - the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration.
