Rector of the Silesian University of Technology elected the President of CRASP

His Magnificence Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk was elected the new President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (CRASP) for the 2020-2024 term.

The meeting of the CRASP Plenary Assembly closed the current 2016-2020 term, chaired by Professor Jan Szmidt, Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology. During the two-day session, representatives of university authorities discussed issues related to current problems of higher education and science in Poland, as well as the functioning of universities in this uncertain time of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of international cooperation or organisation of education in the new academic year.

Using the remote formula, the rectors of Polish universities elected the President of CRASP for the next four years. This is the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Professor Arkadiusz Mężyk, who emphasized in his speech: - One of the most important tasks in the new term of office will be the integration of the academic community, cooperation, joint development of research and teaching potential. Nowadays, especially during the epidemic, it is extremely important to maintain the mutual support of the environment in matters of current activities and resource optimisation, as well as, the dissemination of good practices and management knowledge. The further development of higher education requires building the authority and prestige of Polish universities at home and abroad. It is necessary to establish a good image of CRASP in the academic and socio-economic environment, to represent the interests and views of the environment, and to provide opinions. Regarding the implementation of the provisions of the Act 2.0 and the beginning of the term of office of the rectors, the key task is to maintain the autonomy of the university, to cultivate good academic traditions and the principles of professional ethics. In order to achieve these noble goals, however, it requires to ensure appropriate financing and conditions for the development of scientific research and the education system in Poland.

During the meeting, vice presidents of CRASP were also elected for the next term. These are: Professor Jacek Popiel, rector-elect of the Jagiellonian University and Professor Michał Zasada, rector-elect of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Members of the CRASP Auditing Committee were also elected. Professor Jan Szmidt was given the status of the Honorary President of CRASP. The meeting of the Presidium and the Plenary Assembly of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland was held on 26 and 27 August at the seat of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. CRASP is a representative institution of higher education and science community within the meaning of the Law on Higher Education and Science. The Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland was established on 7 June 1997 by rectors of 73 higher education institutions - members of active then conferences of rectors of individual types of universities. Currently, the institution gathers rectors of 107 universities, including 11 non-public universities. In addition, nine schools have the status of affiliated universities. About a million of people study at the universities affiliated to CRASP, which constitutes 77% of all students in Poland.
