About us

The Silesian University of Technology (SUT) is the oldest technical university in Upper Silesia and one of the largest in the country. It was established in 1945 as a scientific and educational facility for the most industrialized area in Poland, and one of the most industrialized in Europe. For over 75 years it has been an important institution of public life. It plays a significant cultural and opinion-forming role in the region.

The mission of the Silesian University of Technology, as a prestigious European technical university, is to conduct innovative scientific research and development works, as well as to educate highly qualified staff for the benefit of the knowledge-based society and economy, and to actively influence the development of the region and local communities. The university, through continuous improvement of processes and organization, is a friendly and open place for work and development of the academic community.

Silesian University of Technology is the only university in Silesia to be included in the prestigious group of 10 Polish universities, winners of the "Excellence Initiative-Research University" competition organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The university identified 6 main Priority Research Areas:

1. Computational oncology and personalized medicine
2. Artificial intelligence and data processing
3. Materials of the future
4. Smart cities and future mobility
5. Process automation and Industry 4.0
6. Climate and environmental protection, modern energy

The Silesian University of Technology is also a member of consortium within the European Universities Initiative. The consortium consists of 7 universities from 6 countries.

15 educational units of the University – 13 faculties and 2 institutes – currently offer more than 50 study programmes and about 200 specializations, including the whole spectrum of engineering studies. Aside from technical programmes, candidates may also study management and production engineering, architecture, transport, sociology as well as foreign languages and pedagogy. SUT educational units are located in 3 neighbouring cities, which are Gliwice, Zabrze and Katowice, with the main seat in Gliwice.

Currently, SUT educates over 18,000 students at all three levels of study: bachelor (engineering), master and doctoral studies. SUT offers a variety of programmes conducted in English and a large number of programmes conducted in Polish.

Until now, SUT has promoted over 200,000  engineers. Graduates of our university often occupy managerial, directorial and other high positions in industrial corporations, which can be proven by numerous rankings conducted by independent research institutions. According to the report made by Sedlak & Sedlak company, 1 in 12 chairmen in Poland graduated from SUT. Meanwhile, the “Rzeczpospolita” daily states, that the University in Gliwice is ranked fifth in the country in terms of educating future presidents of companies.

SUT is a higher education institution that respects the universal values and academic traditions. It is a modern and widely recognized European institution, one of the top Polish technical universities, educating the elite of the society and supporting the dynamic development of the economy with due regard for the ethical values and the highest quality of research and teaching activities. High position and prestige of the university are built through self-improvement, partnership and cooperation of the employees, students, PhD students and the social and economic environment. These conditions favour creativity, innovation and transfer of technologies.
