Faculty of Chemistry - Scientific research


Department of Inorganic, Analytical Chemistry and Electrochemistry covers a wide range of chemical research, including electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, separation processes, explosive materials and chemical technology of coal.

There are several groups, which conduct research in a particular field of study:

  • Electrochemistry group is devoted to the development and testing of new solutions in the field of surface engineering and corrosion protection. The scope of research interests includes electrochemical surface treatment, anti-corrosion coating, electrosynthesis and bioactivity enhancement of metallic biomaterials.

  • Analytical chemistry group conducts research in the field of food analysis (biogenic amines, methylxanthines, water- and fat-soluble vitamins) and environmental pollution (pesticides, pharmaceuticals and their transformation products, flame retardants). Our research is also focused on water purification through phytoremediation. The group also deals with the study of electrode processes and routine electroanalytical determinations selected analytes.

  • Inorganic technology group focuses on application of membrane and sorption processes in the development of new solutions for desalination, water treatment, recovery of metals and removal of hazardous substances from water and soil. Group members conduct research on electrodialysis, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, membrane electrolysis, adsorption and biosorption.

Within the Department of Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry and Biotechnology there are four research groups, whose areas of scientific interests include the following:

  • Organic and bioorganic chemistry group investigates new synthesis methods of bioactive heterocyclic compounds, involving reactive intermediates; synthesis of complex compounds as MRI contrast agents; design and synthesis of new carbohydrate- and nucleoside-based compounds for potential biological activity against pathogens and enzymes involved in metabolism; synthesis of monomers for optoelectronics.

  • Biotechnology group conducts research in the fields of biotransformation involving enzymes as biocatalysts and resolution of racemic mixtures via biotransformation; chemoenzymatic decomposition of lignocellulose biomass into valuable products; hydrolytic enzymes, in particular metallohydrolases and aminopeptidases; bacterial metallopeptidases.

  • Materials' chemistry group focuses on synthesis and characterization of hydrogels based on carbohydrate moieties as new materials of potential biomedical application. The group also conducts investigation into new hydrogels formed in situ for application in controlled drug delivery systems or scaffoldings assisting tissue regeneration, as well as synthesis of hydrophilic monomers with adhesive properties and their application as novel dental materials.

  • Nanotechnology group conducts research in the fields of synthesis, modification and physical chemistry of Carbon Nanostructures; nanocomposites/nanohybrids with enhanced mechanical, thermal, electrical and/or magnetic properties; magnetically targeted Drug Delivery Systems; nano(bio)catalysts; materials for military/civil engineering; synthesis of monomers for optoelectronics; synthesis of heterocyclic compounds; NMR spectroscopy; ESI-MS spectrometry

Department of Chemical Engineering and Process Design conducts research within four research groups:

  • Nanoporous materials, multichannel microreactors, enzyme immobilization  and nanoparticles

Department of Physical Chemistry and Technology of Polymers focuses on three areas of research, divided into three scientific groups:

  • Group of Polymer Chemistry and Technology conducts research in the fields of synthesis of functional polymers and polymers for special applications; characterization of macromolecular compounds using SEC, DSC, NMR, FTIR, DLS, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and SEM; synthesis of new bone cements and in-situ curable biomaterials; application of polymer materials in controlled drug delivery systems.
  • Group of Physical Chemistry focuses on the synthesis and characterization of conjugated polymers and oligomers; application of spectroelectrochemical techniques for in situ studies of electrode processes; organic electronics and optoelectronics; preparation and characterization of polymer membranes for separation of gaseous and liquid mixtures.
  • Group of Chemical Physics and Biophysics carries out research related to the analysis of transport processes in ion channels of living cells; transport through membranes and separation processes; chaos and nonlinear phenomena in ionic transport; analysis of non-stationary states of diffusion.


Department of Chemical Organic Technology and Petrochemistry is divided into two research groups: Fine Chemicals Group and Industrial Organic Synthesis Group, which conduct research in the following areas:

  • catalytic and non-catalytic oxidation of organic compounds
  • synthesis and application of organic peroxy compounds
  • synthesis and application of ionic liquids as alternative solvents or catalysts in organic synthesis
  • use of organocatalysis in organic synthesis
  • fine chemical synthesis
  • asymmetric synthesis
